Vaccination against Cholera and/or enterotoxigenic E. coli.September 10, 2020

We commenced vaccinations against Cholera and/or enterotoxigenic E. coli., Dukoral (Manufacturer: Valneva). This is a drinkable, imported vaccine from overseas.

Cholera is a bacterial infection by some strains of the bacterium vibrio cholerae, and it is spread mostly by unsafe water and unsafe food that have been contaminated with human feces containing the bacteria. Symptoms (Diarrhea and vomiting) may range from none, mild to severe, and symptoms may start a couple of hours to 5 days after exposure. The diarrhea is frequently described as "rice water" in nature. An untreated person with cholera may produce upto 10 litres of diarrhea a day, and dehydration progresses rapidly, which can even result in death.

It is endemic in parts of Africa (Ethiopia, Congo, Nigeria etc.), Asia (Afghanistan, India etc.), Middle East (Yemen etc.), and Latin America (Haiti, Dominica etc.). Dukoral is effective against cholera and ETEC (enterotoxigenic E. coli). Please take 1 dose 2 weeks before departure and another dose 1 week before departure. Dukoral is effective for 2 years for cholera and 3 months for enterotoxigenic E. coli. Children aged 2 to 6 years can take half the dose for 3 times (3 weeks before, 2 weeks before, 1 week before).

Cholera and enterotoxigenic E. coli are highly infectious and can be spread easily. If you travel to endemic areas, it is important to wash your hands frequently and avoid tap water, ice cubes and raw food.
